Lyme disease can feel like a never-ending battle. Many of us have faced its debilitating effects—the fatigue, joint pain, and brain fog that come creeping in like uninvited guests. During one of my doctor visits, my doctor introduced my husband and I to Supportive Oligonucleotide Therapy (SOT) and told us she thought I was a good fit for it. She informed us that she has several patients with neuro Lyme that has had success with it and wanted us to do our research before agreeing to move forward with it. She explained how it worked and strongly believed that in combination with my IV antibiotics it could be a game changer for me. This innovative treatment has felt like a ray of hope, and I want to share how SOT has played a crucial role in my ongoing fight against Lyme.
What is SOT Therapy?
Supportive Oligonucleotide Therapy (SOT) might sound complex, but the essence is quite straightforward. SOT uses specially designed oligonucleotides (short DNA or RNA molecules) to target specific pathogens causing illness. This personalized treatment is tailored to your individual health profile, making it a potential game changer for those grappling with chronic diseases like Lyme.
When I learned about SOT, a mix of intrigue and skepticism washed over me. I questioned if this type of therapy would really help me as everyone responds different and would my body respond in a positive way? Despite my doubts and a lot of research, I felt I had nothing to lose and decided to give it a try.
My Initial Experience with SOT
Starting my SOT treatment filled me with a blend of anxiety and excitement. The first step was a comprehensive analysis to identify which Lyme pathogens I was combating. They did a SOT blood draw and sent my blood over to a specialty lab in Greece. It would take about 6 weeks to get my SOT back from Greece to be infused into my body. This customized approach felt empowering and instilled a sense of hope.
In the weeks leading up to the SOT infusion, my doctor expressed the importance of allowing my body to rest in preparation for receiving the SOT. Once the SOT arrived, my husband and I traveled 3.5 hours to my doctor's infusion clinic and had the infusion done. The process was simple...the nurse administered an antihistamine and a steroid to help prevent an allergic reaction as well as help veins to prevent leaking of the SOT. I then had to wait 15-20 minutes before the SOT was administered intravenously and once the SOT started infusing it was about a 45 minute infusion. Unlike some harsher therapies I had encountered, SOT did not come with debilitating side effects which was nice. The nurse did tell me they wanted me to rest for 48 hours post infusion, before resuming normal activity, so the SOT could really take hold in my body.
Gradually, over the next few months, I noticed small yet significant shifts. My brain fog started to lift, and my energy levels began to improve. It was as if I was waking from a prolonged hibernation.
The Science Behind SOT Therapy
Understanding the science behind SOT was both fascinating and reassuring. SOT works by disrupting the genetic material of pathogens, impairing their ability to reproduce and infect the body. This stands in contrast to traditional treatments that often focus on killing the pathogens themselves. So the SOT in combination with the IV antibiotics (mentioned in previous post) has been a huge game changer for me. The IV antibiotics were focused on killing the bacteria, but as fast as it was being killed it was replicating just as fast. The SOT's job was to stop it from replicating so the IV antibiotics could be affective. My SOT was done in November of 2024 and I am gearing up for my second one. They only last up to 6 months in your body, so because I had success with the first SOT... I am having another one done coming up in May. I just recently had my new SOT blood draw done in March. It is over in Greece right now and once it arrives, I will be ready for my next SOT infusion and hopefully good for another 6 months!
Life Beyond Treatment: A Shift in Perspective
Several months after beginning SOT, I can genuinely say I've regained control of my life. It's no longer just about fighting Lyme; it's about thriving! SOT has not only transformed my fight against Lyme, but has also reshaped my perspective. I celebrate the small victories and progress in the right direction, no matter how small or big the step may be.
A New Chapter in the Fight Against Lyme
Supportive Oligonucleotide Therapy has been a pivotal experience in my journey against Lyme disease. The personalized nature of SOT not only addressed the root causes of my illness but also rejuvenated my spirit and optimism.
If you find yourself feeling lost in the complexities of Lyme disease, I encourage you to explore SOT. While everyone's journey is unique, having a treatment that is tailored to individual needs can make a significant difference.
